How to Choose a THC Beverage

The category is new enough that there's no standard label to compare against yet. Here's what actually matters when you're deciding between brands, and what to check before you order.

Quick Answer

Before ordering a THC beverage, check five things: a specific labeled potency per can, a real independent Certificate of Analysis (COA) you can actually view, a full ingredient list, whether it’s hemp-derived or marijuana-derived (this determines where it can legally ship), and its alcohol and calorie content if those matter to you.

Start with dosing clarity

A can should state a specific milligram amount — THC, and any other cannabinoid it’s paired with — not a vague “infused” label with no number attached. That number is also your reference point for pacing yourself: knowing exactly how much is in the can you’re holding matters more here than with a cocktail, where alcohol content is at least somewhat standardized by drink type.

Look for real, independent lab testing

A potency claim on the packaging is only as good as the testing behind it. Look for a Certificate of Analysis (COA) from a third-party lab — not affiliated with the brand — that you can actually open and read, tied to the specific lot or batch number on your can, not a generic PDF for the product line as a whole. If a brand publishes potency and contaminant screening results and makes them easy to find, that’s a real signal about how seriously they treat the claim on the label.

Check the ingredient list

Beyond the cannabinoids, a THC beverage is still a beverage — sweetener, flavoring, and whatever base it’s built on. A full, real ingredient list (not just a calorie count or a marketing description) is worth checking the same way you’d check any other drink, especially if you’re managing allergies, sugar intake, or just want to know what you’re actually drinking.

Confirm hemp-derived status and where it can ship

Whether a product is hemp-derived or marijuana-derived is a legal distinction with real consequences for where it can be sold and shipped — see What Are THC Drinks? for the difference. If you’re ordering online, confirm the brand can actually ship to your state before you check out; see Are THC Drinks Legal in Your State? for how to check.

Decide what else matters to you

  • Alcohol content, if you’re specifically looking for an alcohol-free option.
  • Calorie count, and whether it’s stated as an actual nutrition fact, not just a tagline.
  • Flavor and format — lemonade, soda, tea, and sparkling water bases all taste and feel different.
  • Pack size options, if you want to try a single can before committing to a case.

Start low if it's your first time

However you weigh the checklist above, the same general guidance applies to a first-time purchase regardless of brand: start with the lowest available dose, wait to see how it affects you before having more, and check your state’s rules first. See our Responsible Use Policy for what we ask every customer to certify when ordering, and San Buzi’s own lab results for what’s independently verified in every batch we sell.
